Scaggs - Emmett

Source: Weekly Argus News Oct 9, 1897

Emmett Scaggs, a love sick youth of Waynetown, concluded Monday after having received a "cold shake" from his lady love, that life was no longer worth the living. He accordingly procured a vial of carbolic acid but the stuff smelled so strong that Emmett decided to mix with it a little water. Having diluted it to his fancy the young man shook hands with himself, shut his eyes upon a cruel world and took a gulp of the liquid. It was so much stronger than he had anticipated and burned his mouth so badly that Scaggs resolved to put up with the world a while longer and the nasty poison was duly expectorated. Emmett still lives and aside from a blistered mouth is none the worse for the episode. kbz
